I am not sure about range being a factor for the gravity well. I get it about 70% of the time as a mercenary with our second mercenary or sorc the other 30%. That would indicate there is a threat component imo.

Additionally from torhead game files.

IsAlive: Actor=>Target
InRange: Max=>7, Min=>1 (these are normally X10 to my recollection for NPCs)

Therefore, if I am reading this correctly, if you are outside 70 yards he will not target you, inside 10 he will not target you.

I play a Sentinel. I've picked up a gravity well a few times, and it's always been when I've done a force sweep (AoE damage/stun) on the mouse droids and then run out to avoid the 'splosions. When I'm staying right on Karagga for damage output, no wells.

RE: Karagga the Unyielding
There is definitely a minimum range on the Gravity Wells, as it never targets our melee or tank; however, when we tried all stacking in melee range, it was cast on the tank and wiped us. Seems you cannot avoid the ability entirely, there might me some minimum number of people that need to be at range for it to not target melee. We didn't try putting just 1 or 2 at range.

We tried everyone but our sniper in melee range last night on nightmare. The ability went to him every time, however the movement, fire, and droid related issues from all of us being in melee weren't really worth it.

At about 50% we decided to just stack up at range and do the fight normally, bubbling whoever got the well and then cleansing them. With everyone stacked it means there's no travel time inwards, and you just have to run out a few steps to avoid the AoE explosion when it gets cleansed.

Based on this, we're going to try putting two healers in our melee group tonight, and assume nothing odd will happen with the grav wells (this still leaves two healers and 5 DPS at range for us). With the change to Cluster Bombs, this fight got a lot more healing intensive for us, so I think we need to always have healers in range of the tank and not worrying about Grav Wells.

Anyone actually had success with heals in melee? (on 16 man)

Sorry, what exactly is the Cluster Bomb mechanic? Is this his frontal cone AoE? Ideally, this should only hit the tank with proper positioning, correct?

The radius in 16 man nightmare on this cone seems to be much wider than it was for us on normal/hardmode, thus even though it is a frontal cone, it can clip ranged (and even melee) when your tank turns Karagga.

Tonight we tried moving him in a more curved fashion on the corners, rather than the sharp turn. Seemed to go well.

Alright, if that's what the Cluster Bomb is, we have definitely noticed that as well. Basically, our plan is to not just stay in the middle of the room as a ranged group, but instead, drift right when the boss is on the right side, left on the left. That way, we should still be out of the cone, and hopefully it only hits tanks.
