Bear in mind that mods and enhancements can be removed and put in any piece of equipment. So you can take the twenty eight pairs of boots you've acquired trying to get your epic pants and put them to some use. Like disenchanting.

Ya, mods and enhancements don't really drop, you have to get a purple item to strip them from. Armoring, and especially hilts barrels, effectively function as getting an entire piece of gear, since that's what gets an orange item up to level, so those should be on the same drop level.

If you mouse over any of the components in the crafting window, they're tagged as what sort of mission they come from. In the case of the yellow crystals, it's "Grade # Gemstone" - from there it's just a matter of finding what crew skill gives that particular item.

I have arrived at the conclusion that color crystals are bloody complicated and I will be happy with my green flashlight-sword until I am level 50. It definitely appears that yellow, orange, and magenta are options, though more difficult to acquire ones.

I _think_ white, black-blue, black-red, cyan, and purple are not acquirable. I don't know for certain. I for one would love to have a white crystal, that's kind of badass.

Purple crystals are included in tier 2 (Columni) PvE gear, and T2 PvP gear (Champion) has a purple blade (though no removable crystal). T3 (Rakata and Battlemaster) has the red/black crystal/blade.

Yellow is craftable by artificing, but it takes rare-quality components. Orange is acquirable from a number of easily accessed custom items from commendation vendors, the easiest one being the level 16 darkside lightsabers and blasters from the Dromund Kaas commendation vendor.

It has been suggested that magenta, cyan, white, and blue/black are either drops from raids themselves, or their recipes and components are. I personally feel that the former is more likely.

I maxed out Treasure Hunting over the weekend. Top-end treasure hunting rewards orange crystals at a pretty high frequency. Yellow crystals are also rewarded from treasure hunting, though you need to pick the "long" missions to get them, which is why I didn't get any until recently. Given that magenta has been discovered, those are all three I was anticipating.

Two big questions.

1. Can color crystals be removed from operations gear?
2. I see "mastercraft" crystals on TORhead as well as the more familiar "advanced". Are those drop-only?

Mastercraft is crit-crafted T2 crafted gear.
