After noting how random my defense was making damage, I actually disregarded the entire idea of stacking defense first. Once my shield/absorb got close to 45% I felt comfortable beginning to stack defense. 22% is not my cap and according to what I've read here, the 30% DR for defense is not the total defense, but just the amount added by your +def stats so I can pretty much keep stacking defense for a long time assuming the DR for these stats remains the same in 1.2. Now that I have better gear, I am tempted to switch back to stacking defense just to see if the higher defense chance helps enough with RNG to prioritize that instead as the OP suggests. I'm a bit skeptical, though as we want to maintain a steady stream of damage to keep our rage up. In terms of gear, there's no real way to do this without a lot of mod customization. The big key was pulling out all my str, end, def mods and replacing them all with str end absorb. The enhancements are all str, end, shield except for 2 which are the end acc absorb.
