Hi, like Sturmm said you should focus on your shield / absorb rating. I'm not saying it's your only choice, just that it's efficient for the encounters in this game.

Before even discover this website, I had a feeling that defense wasn't a so high priority, at first I thought so but I quickly realize it wasn't so true, at least in my opinion. Btw I play a juggernaut main tank.

So I started to change mods and follow advices from gamers (only here) and from my experience, I try to stay around 22% defense and 40/42 % shield / absorb, even if I have to change and put some older mods, at least I used to do that some weeks ago.

And if you want to see an example, here's a fight on Karagga nightmare, with rakata gear (except gloves and chest, dunno why it doesn't want to drop ^^). You will see that I'm not taking so much damage, except on some mistakes from myself, but I'm just using one cooldown during this fight (except trinket and biochem)
