The only real differences I noticed was PT seemed more hit and run while merc seemed like a stable firing platform; but I was not able play both deep enough to really judge. So does anyone have reasons why a person picks one over the other?

1. No, a Powertech DPS spec will match a Mercenary DPS spec in output. A Powertech tank spec should naturally be more durable than any Mercenary spec since it will be tanking. Mercenaries on the other hand have healing options while Powertechs do not.
2. Neither one has "more AoE" or "more single target," they both should be competent in both DPS scenarios.
3. The major difference is playstyle. Powertechs like to get their hands dirty while Mercenaries typically like to sit back a bit more.
4. As I hinted at before, if you want to be able to fulfill tanking roles, take Powertech. If you want to be able to fulfill a healing role, take Mercenary.
5. Pick one based on your favorite style of play. That's mostly all it is. You should play according to how you prefer to enjoy the game, or else it's going to be a horrible two months leveling a character you hate to lvl50.

Even more simply put:
Powertech = melee (with tanking option)
Mercenary = ranged (with healing option)

for example, Powertech has abilities to pull your enemy next to you, Mercenary has abilities to knock your enemy further away.
It's like do you want to hit your enemy in the face with a fist or a missile
