RE: Consular & Inquisitor - Simple Questions and Answers
Good deal, thanks! I'd still like to be able to macro it, but at least 90 seconds is not so often.

When looking at these numbers, one needs to keep a few things in mind:
1) Talents aren't factored in, which can make a big difference
2) These are DPCT, which makes DoTs look better. However, you can't spam DoTs, so it is entirely possible that more total damage may be doable with a direct damage ability depending on the duration of the DoT.

Negative. DPS is largely irrelevant, when it comes down to it. They only time casting a higher DPCT DoT is worse than casting a lower DPCT (but higher DPS) direct damage spell is when either the DoT will not run it's full duration, or when the goal is burst damage rather than maximum damage. The former is the only time you can deal more maximum damage without casting the DoT.

Also, for the purposes of Chain Lightning, keep in mind that the talent Lightning Storm removes it's activation time, effectively setting it to the GCD of 1.5, or halving the effective activation time. This doubles the DPCT of Chain Lightning. Chain Lightning can also hit up to 5 targets. In AoE, that puts it at a base of 108.41 DPCT, 216.82 under Lightning Storm, and 542.05 / 1084.10 when hitting 5 targets (with / without LS).

Even Angels must kill from time to time...

RE: Consular & Inquisitor - Simple Questions and Answers
So from the looks of this,

Force Lightning 169.5866667

unspecced does a considerate ammount of damage more then the other lightning skills. Now is this damage ratio based on a full 3 second channled attack, I would assume? Do we know how high these damage numbers increase when we start adding talent points into the certain specs?

This is the exact situation I was suggesting with my warning Smile I guess I should have been more clear about that. I completely agree with you regarding the usefulness of DPS vs DPCT.

Also, you are 100% correct about the influence of talents. I am still working on putting everything into a calculator, though now that I have a better grasp of where everything is coming from in the formulas, it is just a matter of doing the work in Excel (which takes time).
Force Lightning Math:

From the cbt_toughness table, at lvl 50, standard damage is 1610. The average damage formula for an ability is:

[(standarddamagemin * standardlvldamage + bonus damage * coefficient) + (standarddamagemax * standardlvldamage + bonus damage * coefficient)] / 2

The base damage I am referring to is just standardamagemin (which for force lightning is the same as standarddamagemax (0.079)) multiplied by 1610 * 4 to account for all 4 ticks. [The standarddamagemin/max is coming from Torhead]. I then got DPCT by dividing by the activation/channel time or 1.5 in the case of instant casts.

Bonus damage was not factored into my numbers, nor were any talent modifiers. In general, an abilities coefficient is 10X the average of standarddamagemin/max.
