Stack up, but don't stand in front of him when the cast ends because he will cleave. He pulls you into his hitbox. Get the tank to take one step, one way and everyone else the other way.
Btw, the cleave is the knockback. It's more of a cone.

Even if it were not bugged, in the sense that you would not take damage outside the reticule, you take 3-5 ticks running out of it. Thus it is probably just more advisable to stack up and heal through it, especially since this is what all guilds have to do currently.
It really isn't hard to live through it. There are 7 ticks, that occur over a 5 second duration. Pre-shield to negate one tick, medpack to negate another and use personal defensive cooldowns plus a slinger shield and you'll live fine. There's no raid damage during the phase anyways, the raid just has to survive and then keep up the tanks.

We killed it May 2 on 16H. I think our Assassin did manage to out-of-range Gift at one point at about 80-100 yards, but he had to use all his cooldowns to get there alive. So we had to coordinate raid cooldowns and eat it.
It's a kinetic attack, so it will hit your light armor people hardest (which means sorcerers/sages, since Assassins can avoid most of the damage on their own). With shields/revivs/personal cooldowns, every other class will live through it except your sorcs, so they need special treatment. We had four sorcs: 3 healers and 1 dps. We did the following:
Everybody else should come out of it fine, as long as they are shielded, in the revivs, and use their damage redux cooldowns/medpacs.

a little trick:
sorcerer can pull out marked (explosive icon) player under the walker after his mark expired/disappeared. 2-4 more sec to dps

In patch notes, gift is fixed. Will double check tonight in raid.

I can confirm that gift is now fixed in 8 man.
Edit - I want to mention something that I dont think I have seen in this thread. Our dps was ending the second burn of the walker at 1%, but on one attempt I had them burn the walker all the way. Dont do this unless you are ready to tank the boss during the Pulsar Power Droids. You are going to have to have your dps throttle their damage output to not push the fight into that phase. We have yet to destroy the walker before the droids are out, which might be possible... has anyone been able to do that? Do the Pulsar droids still appear even if you finish off the walker before they spawn?

We did it tonight on our weekday storymode run. The droids still arrive and act as they normally do, rail shotting people, etc. Nearly wiped due to a healer being rail shotted and the tank he was healing going down. Essentially you still have to deal with the droids while one tank picks up the boss. I'd agree that throttling DPS just before you take down the walker is a good idea.

Great insight and discussion in this thread - some excellent tips. We were able to get 16man hm down last night, and fairly clean too.
After a number of wipes, we decided to use a third tank for the last phase. Made a solid difference in managing the taunt rotation. That last phase is remarkably tricky for the tanks. I'd be keen to hear other's approach if they use 2 tanks.
Our kill was pretty clean

On 16 man it's tuned for 3 taunts, and therefore easiest with 3 tanks. The time between savage arcing slash is lower in 16. Just make sure you taunt during the cast of breath or you run into issues.

Took us a few more pulls than desired to recognized that 3 tank tuning. Agreed - the taunt during the cast is absolutely key or you're dead. You can see in our video that we manage a few taunt rotations without losing a tank, but then we do eventually lose them out in the last 10%.
I really enjoyed the fight - lots of fun.

I can say that doing this fight on 8HM is much easier then 16HM, we killed him last week before reset for the first time on 8HM and last night we managed to do a full 16HM EC clear in one night, followed by also downing Nightmare Pilgrim.
You don't need 3 tanks for 16HM, however if your having problems a third tank/dps is helpful for the taunt rotation just make sure your DPS is good enough to pass the burn/bomb phases otherwise you'll hit hard enrage at the end.
We used 2 tanks; Assassin (myself) and Jugg. The only issue we encountered was that on 16HM he casts BoTM slightly quicker between taunt rotations then in 8HM which means your tank who is dropping the purple circles will still have 1 tick left to drop WHILE taunting Kephess at the same time for the next BoTM.
Whichever player was tanking Kephess at the time they would be parallel with the debuff tank dropping the circles (so kephess was always in range for taunt) which also required the raid to move and stay behind at all times so they were never in front of Kephess, dps would aggro drop on every CD so they didn't pull threat just in case.
Unfortunately I wasn't running fraps but when we kill him again next week I'll record from my POV.
