Need help deciding which profession to select in Guild Wars 2? MMO-Mechanics has you covered! Over the next few weeks, we will highlight each profession available with a brief overview of game play, archetype, and other unique characteristics about the profession to help our fans choose the right profession.
The Mesmer profession should be familiar to those who played the original Guild Wars. Mesmers are the master of illusions, using mental magic that will confused, control, and ultimate wreck their opponents. They can summon illusions to fight for the Mesmer, assist allies, or offer control on the battle field. The Mesmer is a ranged caster DPS class, and as part of the scholar category, they will wear light armor.
When the Mesmer has illusions on the battlefield, it has the unique ability to shatter those illusions to provide a secondary effect, which is based on the type of shattering skill being used. The Mesmer can do AoE damage, perform AoE debuffs, or even allow themselves to evade incoming attacks with the appropriate shatter skill.
Mesmers being a ranged DPS class will have affinity towards weapons dealing damage from afar. One two-handed weapon exception is the greatsword, which the Mesmer uses to shoot energy from its blade. The Mesmer can also use a one-handed/off-hand combination of multiple weapons and items, such as the scepter, focus, pistol, and sword. Aquatic combat will have the Mesmer don a Spear and Trident for versatility.
