MMO-Mechanics GW2 professions review: Elementalist

2012-04-04 13:34:25

Need help deciding which profession to select in Guild Wars 2? MMO-Mechanics has you covered! Over the next few weeks, we will highlight each profession available with a brief overview of game play, archetype, and other unique characteristics about the profession to help our fans choose the right profession.

The Elementalist is another carry over profession from the original Guild Wars. They are a ranged caster DPS class who attune with four elements across the world to unleash powerful damage on their opponents, protect their allies, and control the tide of battle to their favor by using magic gained from attuning to each element. As part of the scholar category, Elementalists will wear light armor.

The Elementalist has a unique ability to ‘attune’ to one of the four elements; Earth, Fire, Air, or Water. Attunements can be switched on the fly in a similar manner to weapon sets for other professions (even while in combat). One attunement will always be active for the Elementalist, and the activated attunement will represent the first five skills on the skill bar. Because of the additional flexibility allowed by switching attunements on the fly (and thus, switching skills), Elementalists are restricted from weapon swapping while in combat.

As a ranged DPS class, the Elementalist has preference towards weapons that can attack from afar. The two-handed weapon of choice is a staff to perform AoE attacks. One-handed/off-hand combinations include a scepter, dagger, and focus to use for closer ranged spells. When battling foes underwater, the Elementalist will use a trident to attack enemies from distance.
